Is the AI Trade Back?

Stocks fell early Monday on worries about the Middle East, but the real action might have been in Nvidia.

The AI chip giant opened lower along with the broader market, doing two key things. First, it touched its lower Keltner Channel. (That’s a technical indicator that plots statistically typical moves for a stock.) As the chart below shows, NVDA has mostly bounced between the top and bottom of its Keltner channel for months. It was true again yesterday.

Second, it touched its 200-day moving average for the first time since May. Chart watchers often view that MA as an important long-term trend indicator. Holding it may suggest buyers are still engaged wit the name.

Prices then did a third thing: They rallied above the high of the previous session, producing a so-called bullish outside day. That pattern can signal a positive reversal following a drop.

Nvidia (NVDA), daily chart, with select patterns and indicators cited in this article.

The S&P 500 traded similarly and held a key support level at 6,800. Ditto for the Nasdaq-100, which stayed above last month’s lows. NVDA is the biggest holding in both index.

AI Earnings

The bounce came shortly after NVDA’s earnings, revenue and guidance shot past expectations. The stock rallied into the report, but fell after the numbers hit. Media outlets attributed the drop to increased competition, but natural born traders know that smart money often sells the news. They also probably saw prices stalling at the top of the Keltner Channel. The same logic that said to reduce risk there had them loading up yesterday morning at the bottom of the channel.

Something else on Monday: NVDA announced taking $4 billion stakes in fiber-optic companies Coherent (COHR) and Lumentum (LITE). The moves focus attention on one of the strongest corners of the technology sector, as datacenters boost bandwidth to meet the needs of AI.

While earnings were important, this month could bring a bigger catalyst: NVDA’s GTC AI Conference March 16-19. (GTC is the same recurring event that launched the AI boom three years ago.)

Jensen at GTC

CEO Jensen Huang speaks at 2 p.m. ET on Monday, March 16. He’s expected to focus on the new Vera Rubin chip. The product, named after an astronomer who studied galactic rotation, offers greater computing power than the current Blackwell system at a fraction of the cost. Huang has also hinted he may unveil new technology that has never been seen before.

Claude Pro breakdown of potential options strategies.

Chart watchers may observe how NVDA has stayed in a tight range since last summer. Given the positive earnings and recent bounce at the 200-day MA, could they view GTC as a potential catalyst for a breakout?

Option traders looking for a positive reaction might consider the contracts expiring on March 20, shortly after the conference. While they could use OptionStation Pro to discover strategies, they might also ask Claude Pro for help. Using the MCP connection to my TradeStation brokerage accounts, I shared my observation about the Keltner channel and asked the AI to build two strategies around the event.

First, it identified the 195 – 200 call spread, which could profit from a breakout of the current range. Claude Pro also found the 175 – 170 put credit spread, which could profit from NVDA staying inside the Keltner channel.

In conclusion, the world’s most valuable company has gone nowhere for months. The broader market has become rangebound during this period of consolidation. But recent earnings may suggest the fundamentals are intact, and current technicals may suggest the trend is intact. Markets have been waiting for a reason to escape the range. And now, despite a lot of fear and negativity, a catalyst might be coming into view.

Options trading is not suitable for all investors.
