Pullbacks and counter-trend fluctuations often occur, creating potential opportunities for directional traders. This can be true for bullish or bearish moves.

Take the S&P 500 for example. The index dropped surged early last month as investors looked for increased certainty after the U.S. Presidential election. It paused and dipped the following week. However it paused at almost exactly a 50 percent retracement of its advance. That gave a potential signal that prices were still ascending.

Halliburton (HAL), on the other hand, has been in a downtrend. It gapped lower in July after revenue missed estimates. The oil-services company bounced meekly before continuing lower in August. Intraday price marked by the long tail was near the 61.8 percent level and the close matched the 50 percent level. That kind of price action potentially confirmed a bearish direction and could have provided traders with potential entries.

In conclusion, Fibonacci retracements can be a useful tool for active traders in the stock market.
